Visiting a windmill

Visiting a windmill is an outing for young and old alike. The miller will gladly tell you about all the activities in and around the mill. Generally, you can assume that if the sails are turning or the flag is flying, you are welcome. But especially visit the mill during specific visiting days.

The monthly turning day is one such occasion. Ten days per year, on the first Saturday of the month, excluding the summer period. Additionally, National Mill Day in May provides an excellent opportunity to visit mills in Kaag en Braassem, as well as Open Monument Day in September. Make sure to check in advance which mills participate on these specific days.

In Kaag en Braassem, there are twenty mills in operation. Some of them are owned by the Rijnlandse Molenstichting (Rijnland Mill Foundation), while others are privately or commercially owned. Mills serve as both cultural-historical monuments and tools. For example, the polder mills are still active in draining the polders. Without mills, we would be standing with our feet in the water.
